The problem: growth is treated as a hunt for strangers
Most small businesses spend almost all of their marketing effort on people who have never bought from them, and almost none on people who already have. The customer list sits in a billing system, untouched. Nobody knows who has stopped ordering, who is due to reorder this month, or which customers quietly account for most of the profit.
The result is a business that works hard to stay flat. New customers arrive, old ones drift away unnoticed, and the average order value never moves because every customer receives the same offer regardless of what they buy. The information needed to fix this already exists inside the business — it is simply not in a usable shape.
